I do, if I know anybody from the community I want to represent. Thing is, I'm Indian, which to an American is already a person of color. But my stories are set in India, so to me, a minority community would be Assamese individuals, or a Zoroastrian, or even a devout Muslim. Some communities are minorities worldwide, such as homosexuals and trans individuals. Thankfully I know specific people belonging to specific minorities, but not all of them. The people I can't actually talk to, I research about by diving down internet rabbit holes, which, people scoff at, but the internet is much more reliable if you use credible sources. There's no way to know everything about anything. That's just not possible. I'm sometimes surprised by my own evolving sexuality, how am I supposed to know everything about others'? But there is a point where... think of it like language. You move to a foreign country, say, Germany, you don't have to know every last German word, you just have to know enough to understand and be understood. Get by. It's a feel, more than an objective yardstick.
