Introduction: The Gravest Misconception Surrounding Artificial Intelligence

“People fear what they don’t understand and hate what they can’t conquer.” — Andrew Smith

I have noticed a difference in the tone of IT professionals and the rest of society when discussing AI. Whereas theirs are comparatively subdued and temperate, ours are more dramatic and sensationalist. And I think that stems from ignorance. We do fear what we do not understand. And we do not understand AI. Not fully. To us, its capabilities appear too complex and fanciful to exist. We have glamorized and vilified artificial intelligence.

One of the most common fears surrounding AI is its supposed humanlike intelligence. People are afraid AI is smarter than humans and will one day take over the world. Now, I love to learn. I think learning something new is one of the simplest and most potent pleasures of life. Which is why I decided to learn whether this fear has any substance. Is artificial intelligence truly smarter than human intelligence?

Short answer? No. Long answer? Strap in.
